Climbing the Ampato volcano
Climbing the Ampato in 3 or 4 daysWe leave at 9:00 am with a four wheel drive in the direction of Chivay, but before we reach the village, we turn on Patapampa, towards the Ampato volcano. After a 5 hour drive from Arequipa, we reach the first base camp at 5000m. The second day we walk for 3 to 4 hours and camp at an altitude of 5500m. to get used to the altitude. The last day we leave the second base camp at 5:00am to make an attempt to go to the top. In 6 or 7 hours we reach the top, where we stay for half an hour. The way back to the last base camp takes about 3 hours. Before we pack the tents and our personal belongings, we eat something. In 1½ hour we walk back to the starting point, where our car is waiting for us to bring us back to Arequipa in about 5 hours. In case we are late back at the base camp, we can stay one more night and go back to the starting point on the fourth day. General informationThis 3 day tour includes:
The price of this tour depends on the size of the group and the equipment you need. We always use experienced guides, that know these mountains well. For the Coropuna and the Ampato and most of the time the Chachani special safety measures are required. In this case we always use a well trained (official mountain) guide. The Misti, Picchu Picchu, Ubinas and Chachani in the dry season however are "easy" to climb and don't need any special precautions. For these mountains we can organise a tour for you with licensed (official mountain guide) or unlicensed (but experienced and qualified) guides. For more information or to climb the Ampato with us, send us an email to info@tamboviejo.com
